Case Making Clothes Moth – Sovereign Island
As the weather gets colder, jumpers, cardigans and other warm clothes are brought out of storage. Many have had the bad experience where they take out their favourite winter woollies only to find little holes and fraying in their garments.
It was Friday afternoon and one of our senior technicians was performing a general pest control treatment for our client in Sovereign Waters. As soon as our technician arrived our client directed him straight to her walk-in wardrobe where our technician was shown her husband’s pure woollen designer suit with little holes all over the rear portion of his jacket!
As this garment was very valuable our client was distressed and wanted a solution to ensuring this damage wouldn’t start appearing in the other garments in their wardrobe.
How Amalgamated Pest Control treat fabric pests
Step 1: Investigation
Our experienced technician thoroughly inspected the wardrobe, inspecting shelf by shelf and moving stored items on the ground looking for evidence of infestation. The result?
Moth casings a little less than a centimetre in length were found suspended underneath several of the wardrobe shelves and also around the carpet edges.
Along with the casings, substantial damage was also located to the carpet. These casings or cocoons (as many may call them) were from the Case Making Clothes Moth. The larvae of the moth eat natural fibres such as wool.
Once they’ve had their feed they create a casing around themselves for approximately 8-14 days at which point they emerge as little moths that will live up to a month laying new eggs that in turn hatch into new larvae and the cycle begins again.
Step 2: Treatment
The Solution? After the inspection it was evident that the majority of the infestation was in the carpet. This went unnoticed by the customer due to the fact she had shoeboxes and other stored goods on top of the affected area.
Our technician eradicated the infestation by doing the following:
- Removing all stored goods off the carpet
- Applying a special product in a spray form to the entire carpet surface to the point of minor saturation, as this is required to enable the treatment penetrate into the shag and pile of the carpet where the majority larvae and eggs are.
Step 3: Prevention
To enable our client to have ongoing protection for their treasured garments we left a special moth crystal product with her.
The moth crystal product could be utilized as an ongoing method of protection that creates an environment that is inhospitable for moth activity around stored clothing.
